"Ëèìåðèê - ýòî òàêàÿ ôîðìà ñòèõà, íàçâàííàÿ â ÷åñòü îäíîèìåííîãî ãîðîäà â Èðëàíäèè, ãäå åùå â ñåìíàäöàòîì, ÷òî ëè, âåêå áûëà î÷åíü ïîïóëÿðíà. Ïåðâàÿ â èñòîðèè êíèãà ëèìåðèêîâ âûøëà â Àíãëèè â 1821ì ãîäó. "Êíèãà Íîíñåíñà" Ëèðà, âûøåäøàÿ â 1846ì, áûëà ïåðåâåäåíà ïî÷òè íà âñå ÿçûêè ìèðà (íà ðóññêèé íå ìåíåå òðåõ ðàç) è äàëà íà÷àëî òàê íàçûâàåìîé ëèòåðàòóðå íîíñåíñà.
 ëèìåðèêå ïÿòü ñòðî÷åê, ïðè÷åì ïåðâàÿ ðèôìóåòñÿ ñî âòîðîé è ïÿòîé, à òðåòüÿ ñ ÷åòâåðòîé. Ñþæåòíî ëèìåðèê âûñòðîåí òàê: ïåðâàÿ ñòðî÷êà ðàññêàçûâàåò î òîì, êòî è îòêóäà, âòîðàÿ - ÷òî ñäåëàë, èëè ÷òî ñ íèì ïðîèçîøëî, è äàëåå - ÷åì âñå çàêîí÷èëîñü.  êàíîíè÷åñêîì ëèìåðèêå êîíåö ïîñëåäíåé ñòðî÷êè ïîâòîðÿåò êîíåö ïåðâîé." There was an Old Person of Chili,
Whose conduct was painful and silly,

Eating apples and pears,
That imprudent Old Person of Chili.
